Lavender Plant Care Tips

Plant your new Lavender plant in well-draining soil, since lavender do not like “wet feet”. Space 1 1/2 – 2 feet for most lavenders. Provence Lavender 4-6 feet.

If planting in a pot, minimum size pot is 12” wide, 12” deep, with drainage holes. Use cactus potting mix as the soil, it drains quickly. Mix pea gravel in the cactus potting mix for even better drainage. Good drainage and good airflow is the key to healthy lavender plants.

Mulch your lavender with rock, (if hot & sunny climate, you may use wood mulch, but do not pile up at center of plant)

Water when needed. If the blooms are wilting in the morning, your lavender needs water. Blooms will usually wilt in the hot afternoon sun. Water around the plant, not directly above to avoid “lodging”.

Lavender needs the sun to bloom, but in extremely hot climates, you may want to provide shade in the hottest part of the day. Morning sun and early afternoon sun is the best.

Harvest your lavender blooms when the stems are stiff and a few of the buds have flowered.
